This is also the most important spawning water in Sweden for the Baltic salmon, a resource which Mörrum Kronlaxfiske has been carefully safeguarding for many years. In later years, visionary fish conservation has enabled sustainable angling for the natural salmon stock. Salmon fishing in Mörrum is ancient, and for centuries has been a royal privilege (that is, it has belonged to the Crown). The first written record of it is in the land register of King Valdemar II, in 1231. In the past, seven-pointed tridents were used to catch salmon on Mörumsån. These were gradually replaced by salmon tubs, hoop nets, salmon seines and salmon nets, which were in use as late as the mid 1960’s. Today, however, all commercial salmon fishing has ceased, but the old permanent fishing areas at Kungsforsen and Hönebygget can still be seen. On certain days during the summer and autumn, the hoop net is used in the time-honoured way. All other salmon and sea trout fishing nowadays is for sport.
